Subscriptions to iD Mobile Credit Payment Services Top 15 Million

TOKYO, JAPAN, September 9, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that subscriptions to iD™, its branded platform for using postpaid electronic money with DOCOMO handsets and compatible credit cards, had topped 15 million and reached 15.09 million at the end of August nationwide in Japan.

Launched in December 2005, iD reached 5 million subscribers in November 2007, 10 million in December 2008 and 15 million in August 2010, just 4 years and 9 months since the launch (see graph).

DOCOMO promoted the use of iD by offering an increasing number of compatible handsets and cards as well as adding more opportunities to use the iD services. The number of subscribers using handsets equipped with contactless IC chips (Osaifu-Keitai™) compatible with iD has surpassed 37.5 million, representing over 60% of all DOCOMO subscribers.

DOCOMO, which is offering a credit payment service known as DCMX™, and 67 credit card companies such as Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company, Limited are currently offering credit payment services via iD. A number of companies provide iD-enabled plastic credit cards in addition to Osaifu-Keitai handsets.

Currently, there are approximately 481,000 iD-enabled payment terminals nationwide which allow users to make payments just by waving compatible mobile phones or cards over them.

iD can be used in more than 90% of all convenience stores in Japan, including all am/pm and Seven-Eleven stores, which completed the installation of iD terminals to all their stores nationwide in December 2006 and July 2010 respectively. Seicomart plans to install the terminals in all of its stores in October. According to a survey by the Japan Franchise Association, the average purchase amount is over 20% higher if the customer pays via iD only.

Today, iD can also be used at McDonald’s locations, Coca-Cola vending machines, and electronics retailers as well as in taxi cabs and shopping malls.

As a result of expanding opportunities and the benefits of using iD, over 16 million transactions were made in June 2010 alone. DOCOMO is also supporting stores using iD by implementing marketing initiatives and service enhancements possible only with mobile phones.

NTT DOCOMO and DNP to Partner in E-Publishing and Retail Business

TOKYO, JAPAN, August 4, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. and Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) announced today that they will partner in an electronic publishing business covering content aggregation, distribution and retail sales of e-books, which DOCOMO customers in Japan will access with a variety of mobile devices from this fall.

The business will use an open platform by combining DOCOMO’s existing content-distribution and payment systems with DNP’s planned hybrid digital/physical bookstores.

Initially targeting DOCOMO customers, the business will sell e-books via a mobile bookstore that users will access with DOCOMO wireless devices, including mobile phones, smartphones, tablet computers and e-book readers. The store will launch with more than 100,000 titles, including electronic books, manga comics, magazines and newspapers.

DOCOMO and DNP also are discussing the possible formation of a joint-venture company, collaborations with publishers and mobile-device manufacturers, and expansion into overseas markets.

DNP, one of Japan’s largest comprehensive printing companies, revealed last month its plan for a hybrid digital/physical bookstore system, which will combine the newly announced mobile store for e-books, the DNP group’s existing “bk1” online store for printed books and physical bookstore chains in the DNP group, including Maruzen, JUNKUDO and Bunkyodo.

DOCOMO, Japan’s largest mobile operator with 56 million subscribers, has extensive expertise in mobile content distribution, billing and payment systems, and the operation of secure wireless networks.

Yoshinobu Noma, Senior Executive Vice President & COO of Kodansha Ltd., said: “We expect this alliance, which encompasses a vast number of physical bookstores as well as Japan’s largest mobile operator in terms of customers, will play a major role in the development of Japan’s e-book market.”

Masahiro Oga, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shogakukan Inc., said: “By effectively fusing the unique qualities of the paper and digital worlds, we expect this all-new service will contribute to the advancement of text-based culture and create new opportunities for readers to discover books.”

Lee Kyu Hong, President of LG Electronics Japan Inc., said: “The e-book business is attracting significant international attention. With Japanese industry leaders taking this initiative, we expect the market for this new business to grow.”

Takemitsu Kunio, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Member of the Board of NEC Corporation, said: “The expansion of e-publishing will advance the digitization of books and other types of content, and also lead to new user experiences and enhanced convenience. NEC welcomes the move.”

Hongsik Cho, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., said: “We expect the announced e-publishing business to further enrich book and magazine culture and enhance users’ convenience. Samsung Electronics welcomes the move and will strive to offer attractive devices that vitalize the Japanese market.”

TOKYO, JAPAN, July 27, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it has signed a licensing agreement with MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions headquartered in Taiwan, to deploy “LTE-PF,” a mobile-device chipset platform (see diagram) based on Long Term Evolution (LTE), the new mobile communication standard being adopted worldwide for super-fast downlinks above 100 Mbps and uplinks above 50 Mbps.

This is the first license agreement for LTE-PF, which was jointly developed by DOCOMO, NEC CASIO Mobile Communications, Ltd., Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited.
DOCOMO to Begin Pre-launch Operation of LTE Network

TOKYO, JAPAN, June 8, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that on June 8 it will begin verifying its new commercial mobile network system based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) protocol in the Tokyo area, prior to the full-scale launch of extra-high-speed LTE commercial service in December.

The aim is to verify the LTE network system for speed, latency, stability of inter-cell handover and other conditions required for commercial operation.

DOCOMO expects to confirm 5 MHz-bandwidth throughput for 37.5 Mbps downlinks and 12.5 Mbps uplinks, and later 10 MHz-bandwidth throughput for maximum 75 Mbps downlinks and 25 Mbps uplinks in selected test areas.

The 2 GHz network system comprises dual W-CDMA/LTE base stations, LTE core network equipment and LTE-enabled mobile devices. For efficiency, DOCOMO has been installing LTE base-station components on existing W-CDMA 3G base stations. Base stations in DOCOMO’s existing W-CDMA network that already are equipped with dual W-CDMA/LTE remote radio equipment1 can be easily upgraded for LTE service with the addition of an LTE BDE (base station digital equipment).

The LTE devices to be used in the pre-launch operation are equipped for theoretical speeds of 100 Mbps downlinks and 50 Mbps uplinks. Compatibility with W-CDMA will enable seamless handover as the devices move between LTE and W-CDMA service areas in the network. The devices also are compatible with the GSM protocol, which will enable them to be used on LTE/GSM networks in overseas markets.

DOCOMO’s 3G Data-Service Discount Targets New Mobile Wi-Fi Mini-Router

TOKYO, JAPAN, May 18, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that beginning June 1 it will offer a special discount on two data-service billing plans, targeting users of a soon-to-be-launched mobile Wi-Fi® mini-router, which will allow Wi-Fi-enabled devices to work on the DOCOMO 3G mobile network (see diagram below), as well as the existing FOMA™ data card.

Co-developed by NTT Broadband Platform, Inc. and BUFFALO INC., the mini-router fits easily into a pocket or purse. It is scheduled to be sold at a number of DOCOMO outlets beginning in late June.

The mini-router will allow tablet computers, notebook PCs, handheld gaming consoles and other devices with wireless local area network (WLAN) capability to connect easily and quickly to the Internet anywhere in DOCOMO’s nationwide FOMA 3G network.

As a special discount, DOCOMO will reduce the maximum monthly charges for the Flat-rate Data Standard and Flat-rate Data Standard Value billing plans by 1,575 yen including tax in each of the first 13 months for new subscribers who sign up anytime between June 1 and September 30, 2010 under a two-year contract. As a result, the maximum monthly charge will be 4,410 yen under the Flat-rate Data Standard Value option (see graph below).

Both plans start with a basic monthly charge for minimum usage and then graduate to a two-tier pricing structure for additional packets, comprising pay-as-you-go charges (0.042 yen/packet) up to a fixed ceiling or a flat-rate charge for unlimited packets beyond the ceiling.

DOCOMO, Renesas Electronics, Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Sharp to Develop Mobile Application Platform

TOKYO, April 26, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC., Renesas Electronics Corporation, Fujitsu Limited, NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Sharp Corporation today announced their agreement to jointly develop a new application platform for mobile phones that will be compatible with both the Symbian and Linux operating systems. Commercial launch of mobile phones incorporating the new platform is scheduled in the second half of the fiscal year ending in March 2012.

The new platform will offer improved processing speeds for high-quality video and enhanced 3D graphics processing for advanced mobile multimedia functions.

All six companies will utilize their expertise in mobile phone development based on their respective experiences in using existing platforms for either Symbian or Linux. In particular, the new platform will enable mobile phone manufacturers Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Sharp to avoid having to develop basic application-processing functions on their own, thereby allowing them to significantly reduce development time and costs and conversely invest more time and resources in the development of manufacturer-specific handset features.

The platform is planned to be offered to mobile phone manufacturers worldwide.

Compatibility with open operating systems such as Android also is under consideration.

TOKYO, JAPAN, April 20, 2010 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today the start of its 1GOAL Mobile Campaign to let mobile users express their support for 1GOAL: Education for All, a global initiative to promote universal primary school education for children.
1GOAL, a global initiative organized by the non-governmental organization Global Campaign for Education, aims to ensure that by 2015 every child worldwide will be able to fully complete primary schooling, one of the Millennium Development Goals adopted by the U.N.
The GSM Association (GSMA), the world's biggest association of mobile operators and other companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, announced its support for 1GOAL in February 2010. DOCOMO and 18 other GSMA members will conduct 1GOAL promotional campaigns in their respective markets from April to June, after which GSMA will tabulate the support that users communicate through various mobile response mechanisms. The data will be submitted to the U.N. in September to demonstrate to global leaders and the U.N. that universal education is a universal demand.
